Poroshenko: For 5 years we have held back the construction of Nord Stream 2, because it is a security threat for Ukraine

The situation concerning the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline is critical to Ukraine, not only economically, but also in terms of security. This was said by the Fifth President and leader of the European Solidarity Party Petro Poroshenko in an interview with the volunteer-run radio station in the Donetsk region. He reminded listeners that during his presidential term he used all possible international leverage to stop the Russian project.

“For 5 years we have held back the construction of Nord Stream 2. It has two negative factors- the worst is not the economics, but security. Why hasn’t Putin bombed Ukraine? Because Ukraine in Ukraine there is the pipeline- and then he would be left without money. Now, he will do what he did with Turkmenistan, he will destroy the pipeline here,” Poroshenko warned.

The fifth President noted that during a press conference between Volodymr Zelenksy and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, the Ukrainian president had expressed shared views on Nord Stream 2 with the Americans, who have recently eased sanctions on the project.

“Zelensky says that we have completely common views with the Americans on the construction of Nord Stream 2. And then the Americans say, ‘we’re lifting the sanctions.’ So, are these your common views? This comes at the cost of security. The cost of this is $2 billion a year. I brought money to the country. I won an arbitration with Gazprom for $4.45 billion- and every last penny went to the state budget. I won lawsuits against Yanokovych, and $1.5 billion went to the state budget. I privatised PirvatBank and sued Kolomoisky for $5 billion through the courts in London. A now Zelensky’s government are just squandering this money, increasing the foreign debt, not delivering on reform, and today they are stopping the fight against Nord Stream 2,” the leader of European Solidarity stated indignantly.

“If they continue to act in this way, Nord Stream 2 will be completed, and that is a terrible situation,” Petro Poroshenko said.
