On the anniversary of the liberation of Rubizhne and Toretsk, the fifth president and the leader of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, shared his memories of that day seven years ago.
“I well remember the day on July 21, 2014, when in a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, I announced that it was at this moment that the Ukrainian military was liberating Rubizhne and Toretsk from Russian gangs and mercenaries,” Poroshenko wrote on Facebook.
“Despite the enemy’s resistance, my order to counterattack was carried out brilliantly: step by step the towns and villages of Luhansk and Donetsk regions were liberated,” the fifth president said.
“Rubizhne and Toretsk were released and recaptured without any casualties on our part. But Russian gangs and mercenaries suffered significant losses in personnel and armoured vehicles, “Poroshenko reminded.
“The Ukrainian flag was finally hoisted over the buildings of the Rubizhne and Toretsk City Councils. I thank the Ukrainian soldiers for their courage and heroism. Thanks to you, peace has returned to Ukrainian soil!” wrote the leader of European Solidarity.
