The fifth President of Ukraine and leader of the European Solidarity party Petro Poroshenko met with US Chargé d’Affaires George Kent.
Petro Poroshenko expressed gratitude for Washington’s strong long-standing support for Ukraine’s struggle to restore its sovereignty and territorial integrity and to build a resilient Ukrainian state faced with internal and external challenges.
The importance of strengthening transatlantic sanctions on Russia to stem the Kremlin’s aggression and ensure the de-occupation of the Donbas and Crimea was also stressed.
Support was expressed for Ukraine’s initiative to launch the Crimean Platform.
Petro Poroshenko stressed the danger of the announced agreement between Washington and Berlin on the launch of Nord Stream 2, which is a weapon in Putin’s hands to undermine European energy solidarity and poses a direct threat to Ukraine.
The Fifth President of Ukraine noted the importance of Ukraine’s accelerated progress towards NATO membership, starting with the submission of a Membership Action Plan. “The more our allies hesitate, the more this indecision inflames the Kremlin’s appetites,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.
He also stressed the importance of strengthening US military assistance to Ukraine, including through the conclusion of a bilateral security agreement.
The parties discussed the situation in Ukraine, in particular, in the field of strengthening democracy and the rule of law, fighting corruption and ensuring the independent functioning of anti-corruption bodies, the NBU, effective corporate governance, and media freedom.
The Eurosolidarity leader stressed the importance of the President of Ukraine’s visit to the United States and expressed hope that its results would strengthen allied relations between Kyiv and Washington, as well as establish a relationship of trust between the leaders of the two countries.
