Poroshenko: Our colleagues from the European Parliament reject idea of changing election legislation and postponing election

The European Parliament considers it inadmissible to postpone the election date to the Verkhovna Rada and return to the old electoral system. This was announced after a meeting with a delegation of MEPs by the leader of “Eurosolidarity”, the fifth President Petro Poroshenko. He noted that reforms were one of the key topics during the delegation’s meeting with the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ukraine’s Integration with the EU.

“Several MEPs, including the speaker from Ukraine Michael Galer, and co-chairs of delegations, raised the issue of election law. They reject the idea of postponing the parliamentary elections from October 2023 and changing the electoral system,” Poroshenko said.

“The Electoral Code was developed with the participation of the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe and the European Union, and the attempt to move from open lists to what Zelensky’s team is trying to do now is a departure from European democratic principles, an attempt to manipulate and undermine key credentials. the instrument of democracy – free and democratic parliamentary elections,” the party leader said.

“I really hope the Zelensky’s deputies hear this. I very much hope that these shameful initiatives will be stopped,” Poroshenko said.

He also noted that the issues of the independence of anti-corruption bodies and protection of local self-government entities, which are currently under special pressure, were discussed at the meeting.

“We hope that the results of this visit will lead to a separate debate in the European Parliament with the adoption of a resolution. And our wishes regarding the content of this Resolution were gratefully accepted by the MEPs,” Petro Poroshenko concluded.
