Poroshenko after a conversation with Ursula von der Leyen: there is cautious optimism regarding 50 billion euros for Ukraine

Petro Poroshenko met with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. As the fifth President announced on social networks, the main topic of all his conversations with Europeans is financial aid to Ukraine of 50 billion euros, which must be adopted urgently.

“I thank the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for a frank and serious conversation about long-term support for Ukraine and our European future. The most difficult year is ahead for both Ukraine and the world. We must join forces for a common victory and a strong united Europe. After the meeting, I am cautiously optimistic about the positive results of the European Council meeting on February 1 regarding the multi-year aid package of 50 billion euros for Ukraine,” Poroshenko wrote.

He also discussed the need to urgently adopt a package of financial assistance with the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič.

“He stressed the importance of starting the opening negotiations as soon as possible and approving the Support Mechanism for Ukraine for 2024-2027 of EUR 50 billion. Because membership in the EU is something that Ukrainians won on the battlefield, and financial support will help not only Ukraine but also the EU itself, which today our soldiers are protecting from the Russian invasion,” Poroshenko is convinced.

“We discussed the process of reforming the European Union in the context of future enlargement. He also noted the importance of maintaining unity among the EU member states in the matter of supporting Ukraine and the need to establish constructive relations with Budapest and Bratislava. I invited Maroš Šefčovič to pay a visit to Ukraine,” writes the fifth President.

Earlier, during a speech at the Political Assembly of the EPP, Petro Poroshenko also called on European partners to urgently decide on the allocation of financial aid for Ukraine. Poroshenko also discussed the issue of approving the Ukraine Support Mechanism for 2024-2027 with EPP President Manfred Weber.
