In 7 years, the Foreign Affairs Committee has not made a single visit to any capital. This was stated by Mariia Ionova, a Member of Parliament from the “European Solidarity” faction, during the discussion of the Resolution on the Appeal of the Verkhovna Rada to the parliaments and governments of foreign states, the United Nations, and the International Atomic Energy Agency in connection with the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy.
“The draft Resolution on the Appeal of the Verkhovna Rada is, of course, very important. When we witness Russian terrorist strikes on Ukraine’s civilian critical infrastructure, we realize that this topic remains vital today. Russia systematically threatens the safety of nuclear facilities in our country – missiles flying over nuclear power plants, attacks on energy infrastructure, and debris from munitions falling on the grounds of nuclear sites – these are things that, unfortunately, the world tries to ignore, and we must constantly remind them,” the MP stated.
“The Russian Federation uses nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as a tool of influence and blackmail, and sanctions against the state company ‘Rosatom’ are a key component of successful economic pressure on the aggressor. These profits are used to finance the war and the killing of Ukrainians. We also see how the Russian Federation uses satellites in Europe to strengthen its influence, as is happening in Hungary,” Ionova noted.
“I want to commend the systematic work of the temporary commission of inquiry, but I would also like the Foreign Affairs Committee to work systematically. In 7 years, the relevant Foreign Affairs Committee has made no visits to any capital. We haven’t even had an online meeting with the United States Congress. Therefore, the travel ban must end, the division into ‘us’ and ‘them’ must stop, and we must work systematically. ‘European Solidarity’ calls for this,” emphasized Mariia Ionova.
